Takayama and Surrounding Area

The Old Quarter of Takayama

Known by the name "Sanmachi," the old quarter of Takayama consists of three streets in the center of town that preserve much of the look and feel of the castle town as it was hundreds of years ago. Located within a 10 minute`s walk of Takayama Station, the old quarter is easily accessible and has become one of the must-see destinations in Gifu Prefecture. Old merchants' houses and sake breweries line both sides of the streets, lending the area a very traditionally "Japanese" atmosphere and architectural style.

World Heritage Site Shirakawa-go

Recognized as a World Cultural Heritage Site since 1995, Shirakawa-go is highly praised for preserving rare and yet essential elements of traditional Japanese culture. The gassho-zukuri-style thatched roof houses and the traditional countryside scenery among which the houses stand played a crucial role in it becoming a World Heritage. The interplay between the houses and the landscape (from the rice paddies to the footpaths running between them) is the true appeal of Shirakawa-go.

Cycle Around a Traditional Farming Village or Hike in the Majestic Outdoors

In Takayama and Hida City one can experience a variety of cycling related activities such as English guided tours, which allow one to see into the everyday life of Japanese countryside living, and special “rail mountain bike” experiences that have one riding modified mountain bikes along abandoned railroad tracks. The area surrounding Takayama is home to many mountains that are over 3,000 meters tall. These mountains, and the many forests located among them, provide the perfect environment to enjoy some hiking or trekking.
